What Size Down Comforter is Right For Me?

Down bedding, specifically down comforters are the platinum standards in sleep luxury. They combine silky soft down enveloped with crisp cotton keeping you in a cloud of comfort. Down comforters come in many styles and sizes and with all the technical attributes can sometimes be a difficult product to buy.

The main ingredient of a down comforter is the down filling. Down can come from ducks or geese and be grey or white. Many consumers confuse down and feathers together but they are really different. Down provides softness and warmth - great for comforters and blankets. Feathers provide support - great for feather beds, pillow forms and some types of pillows.

The first step in buying down bedding is to know what size you need and from there the other details can be settled down (fill type, fill power, weight, fabric choice). You would think its pretty straight forward to buy the right size comforter for your bed. After all if you have a queen size bed then you would buy the queen size down comforter - right? Well that's kind of true although you may wish to upgrade the size and get a bigger size comforter to provide better bed coverage and prevent nightly tug of war with a sleeping partner.

The main issue to know about regarding sizes is to make sure that if you are using a duvet cover on the down comforter then the size of the comforter should be preferably a bit larger than the duvet but could range plus or minus two inches for maximum fit. Most duvets are made of cotton and they will shrink - so if your duvet is 92 x 92 and your comforter is 90 x 90 that is okay. Duvets are washed just like your sheet set - so the frequent washings will keep your duvet decreasing in size by a couple inches the first few times.

You will want to take great care and know your comforter and duvet measurements assuming you are using a duvet. Duvets are optional and about 25% of consumers cover their down comforters with easy care machine washable duvet cover protectors. The benefit of the duvet is that you can remove it from the duvet and wash and dry it on demand just like your sheet sets. Most down comforters covered with a duvet are washed about once a year with some occasional setting out in the sun on dry, low humidity days.

Because we recommend larger size comforters for comfort we would suggest the following size chart for consideration:
Twin Bed - Upgrade to a Twin XL like 68 x 90 or 68 x 92 Full Bed - Upgrade to a Full/Queen like 90 x 90 up to 90 x 98 Queen Bed - Upgrade to an Oversized King like 108 x 98 King Bed - Upgrade to a Super King like 116 x 198

A comforter is a key part of your bed, so make sure you get one that you absolutely love. After all, it is going to be with you night in and night out.

Rock-Solid Parents For Challenging Teens

Last night my 16 year old daughter swaggered into my bedroom, wrapped in a queen sized quilt, and snuggled into my big chaise next to me. She was feeling sick - a touch of the flu and a headache. She put her head on my shoulder and waited for me to put my arm around her and give her a kiss on the head. She needed to be loved by her mom.

Hold that picture in the back of your mind, and consider another teenage girl. She is also in pain tonight. Her parents are getting a divorce, school isn't going so well, and she has been gaining weight. Her fear about change in her life is playing itself out in temper tantrums and bad grades. She comes into her mother's bedroom, swears at her, calls her foul names, and lies about where she's been tonight. She needs to be loved by her mom.

Sometimes teenagers' needs are easy to hear. When my daughter came into my bedroom, where my door was closed, I was on a personal phone call. She was totally interrupting my privacy and infringing on my space and time. But she was confident that she would not be turned away. It didn't matter who I was talking with, she knew that her need would be met with acceptance and love.

But some teenager's needs aren't so easy to listen to. It's one thing to show compassion to a sick child. I did that, and it was simple. How can parents give that same acceptance to a child who is acting out in defiance, irresponsibility, or rage? When teenagers are nasty to parents, how can parents muster strength, understanding, self-control, and empathy to embrace teens with the unconditional love they crave and need? What happens when life is hard for a parent, and he or she just can't take any more of this treatment from a teenager? What do we do?

When we can't take the behaviors that are being dished out by our teens, our natural reaction is to forbid them. We ground teens, lecture them, and create systems to make them pay for their actions. We hope that one day we'll hit on just the right punishment to make our teen feel bad enough to start doing good.

What an ironic thought. We want to make teens feel bad, so they'll do good.

Could the reverse be the answer? Is it possible to create an environment where a teen will feel good enough to do good? Could it also be that parents need an environment where we feel good enough to do good in our parenting? Do we need to feel loved before we can love a challenging teenager?

Parents, please consider that the answer to that last question is a robust, "Yes!" We all know that you can't get water from a dry well. And it's true that when I look good to myself, others look better to me. So, when living with the challenges of a troubled teenager it's extra important to seek out sources of support, encouragement, happiness, and joy in your own life.

During a very difficult time in my life I took a morning walk every day. It became my habit to smell the morning air, listen for familiar bird songs, pay attention to the weather, and watch for other walkers to greet. I learned to marvel at creation, as I noted new buds on trees and new flowers that had opened since the day before. There was a cardinal living on my route and I was eager to seek him out every day, listening for his distinctive song. I was amazed at cloud formations. In the winter I paid attention to the sound of the snow crackling underfoot. I noticed animal tracks in the snow along my path, just imagining who had made them. This simple morning routine became a spiritual beginning to my day, lowering my anxiety level and giving me focus to get through those trying times.

If, at this moment in your life, you are living in a stressful situation with an unhappy teenager, take a moment to ponder these questions:

o No matter what chaos is in your day, where can you find peace?

o Where do you feel safe and secure?

o What can you count on to always give you joy?

o What kind of music lifts your spirit?

o Who makes you laugh?

o Who is the person you can call on for support at anytime of the day or night?

If you are living with pain today because your teenager has disappointed you, rejected you, worries you, or embarrasses you, put some of these experiences and people in your daily routine. Remember that bad behavior from teenagers comes out of pain, even though we don't always understand it. Teens in pain need a rock-solid parent who is strong, calm, and wise.

Rock-solid parent. That's a tall order, isn't it? You can do it, but it won't happen by accident. You'll need to become intentional, focused, and strong. Dorma Bedding - A Review

Well, in case it's not readily apparent from the name of this post, I am kind of a fan of Dorma bedding. This stuff is great. I wouldn't normally plug a brand name of anything, and I don't have any links up trying to sell Dorma bedding sets and the like, so hopefully you'll just take this as good, honest advice.

I bought my first Dorma bedding set close to twenty years ago, and truth be told, I can't remember the name of the pattern, but it was from that moment on that I was hooked. All I can actually remember about it was that the predominant color was green... not much help, I know. Anyway, that was for a double mattress that I was sleeping on at the time, and I probably had those sheets for five years, much longer than I hold on to the average bedding set.

What set Dorma bed linen immediately apart from sheets I had had in the past was the feeling of quality that I got during that very first night of sleep. Again, I don't remember enough of the details to give accurate technical specifications, but the thread count felt decent, and the quality of manufacturing was obvious. I couldn't believe it, and continue to be amazed simply because whatever the thread count was on those sheets, I knew that I hadn't paid sufficiently for it. Not that I stole them or anything, they were just a very good deal... honest.

Fast forward several years, and dozens of bedding sets, and I have come full circle. Having forgotten about Dorma linen all these years, the brand suddenly popped back into my memory. I went out to several stores, seeing if I could find a new set of these sheets to recreate my Dorma bed from years ago. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the brand in any stores, which dismayed me a bit, but looking online when I got home from that outing calmed my fears that they had gone out of business, or something similar. I quickly found them on Amazon UK, though I must say that this was a bit inconvenient as I live in the US. I'm especially confused as to how I came across them in the first place given that I was only able to find them on UK sites, but no matter.

I purchased a set of the Kalamkari sheets in a queen size (I now have a larger, metal bed), and awaited their arrival. Can you believe that I was just as pleased when I got my new Dorma bedding set as I was all those years ago? I was shocked, as I think it's an unfortunate testament to the world we live in today that so many of the brands we look back on fondly now produce substandard products and consistently disappoint us in the memories we hold of them. But, that's a little beside the point. The main point is that Dorma bedding was exactly as great as I remember it, and that's something worth noting.

Sheets in hand, I had to do a bit more research on this impressive company. Headquartered in Manchester, the company technically dates back to 1920, though it has roots from much earlier, their site claims, as two brothers originally founded the firm in 1841 as a fabric weaving company. And, not at all to my surprise, the company has done some very innovative things over the years. Not only were they one of the first company to sell their bedding to retailers in pre-packaged sets, they were also one of the first bedding manufacturers to produce printed bed linen in the 1960s, an absolutely revolutionary practice. Also added to their credits are the line of quilt covers that they produced en masse, and the cotton/polyester blends that they pioneered.

The company is still based in Manchester, which is great to hear, and I'm happy to report that they are still producing bed linens of the highest caliber. You certainly owe it to yourself to give a Dorma bedding set a shot, as it won't break the bank by any means. I am of course partial to the Kalamkari pattern, but their homepage also boasts of the Heather pattern, an equally attractive design. As I've mentioned before on this site, a great way to get a feel for a potential new set of sheets is to buy a couple of pillow cases and give them a test drive, so to speak. I am quite confident that you will fall in love with Dorma, as I did so many years ago, and will come back to order the rest of the set. Here is a link to Dorma, as they can certainly describe themselves better than I can -- check them out and see if you agree with my sentiments, I can't imagine that you'll be anything short of satisfied.
